Name Our Ship online poll has now closed

17 April 2016

NERC would like to thank everyone who has supported our campaign to name the UK's next world-class polar research ship.

The Name Our Ship online poll closed at midnight (Saturday, 16 April) with around 7,000 suggestions.

Set to set sail in 2019, and backed by £200 million of government funding, the polar research ship will be built at the world-famous Cammell Laird shipyard on Merseyside.

Tonne-for-tonne, the ship - together with NERC's existing two blue water research ships - will provide the UK with the most advanced floating research fleet in the world and will help put the UK at the forefront of ocean research for years to come.

NERC will now review all of the suggested names and the final decision for the name will be announced in due course.

Find out more about NERC's new ship in the short film below about the incredible research it will carry out at the poles.

Subtitles (closed captions) are available once the video is playing.
