NERC is saddened by the death of a highly respected marine scientist and colleague
14 August 2014
We are very sorry to hear that Professor Laurence Mee, director of the Scottish Association for Marine Science, died yesterday (13 August 2014) following a stroke.
Laurence had worked most closely with NERC since 2008 as director of SAMS, continuing an international career at the forefront of marine science. As director he was responsible for all aspects of SAMS' work and a team of around 270 staff and students, while himself an active scientist. As an expert in the relationship between people and the marine environment, Laurence worked with politicians, community leaders, educationalists and business leaders to find ways to use our seas more sustainably.
Our thoughts and sympathies go to his family and to his many friends and colleagues around the world. He will be greatly missed.
