Announcement of Opportunity: SPF (Space Weather Instrumentation, Measurement, Modelling and Risk)

Call opens (JeS): 4 December 2019

Call closes: 4pm, 30 January 2020

Project start date: by 1 June 2020

NERC is inviting proposals for the first funding call as part of the UKRI Space Weather Instrumentation, Measurement, Modelling and Risk (SWIMMR).

SWIMMR is managed jointly by NERC and STFC and is funded by UKRI which has allocated ~£20M to this programme. The UK Met Office, as the UK delivery agency for space weather forecasts, will be the primary recipient for the models and instruments delivered by this research-to-operations programme.

SWIMMR will develop and deploy new instruments, models and services to support the UK space weather community and the Met Office Space Weather Operations Centre. This programme will significantly add to the UK's capability to predict and mitigate the hazards of space weather, as well as providing a basis for wider international collaboration over the four-year lifetime of the proposal and beyond.

The five topics where proposals are sought as part of this call and their budgets are:

  • N1 Satellite risk forecasts (£2M, 80% FEC)
  • N2 Aviation risk forecasts (£2M, 80% FEC)
  • N3 GNSS and HF aviation forecasts (£2M, 80% FEC)
  • N4 Ground effects forecasts (£1.7M, 80% FEC)
  • N5 Satellite drag forecasts (£1M, 80% FEC).

Further information on the call and how to submit an application can be found in the Announcement of Opportunity (PDF, 1.3MB).
