Pre-announcement: Joint NERC / AHRC / ESRC call on Managing the Environment to Improve Human Health and Wellbeing

27 March 2015

NERC, the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC), are planning a major new investment as part of the Valuing Nature Programme (VNP).

The new call will provide an opportunity for natural and social scientists, and arts and humanities researchers to form substantial interdisciplinary research collaborations which aim to increase our understanding of the role biodiversity and ecosystem processes play in human health and wellbeing. The focus of the call will be on the themes of:

  • natural hazards and extreme events
  • the exposure of people to vector-borne diseases and marine toxins
  • health improvements associated with urban ecosystems.

A summary from the scoping workshop held at the Royal Society in London on Friday 20 March 2015 will also be used to inform the call, and will be available on the resources section of the VNP website in due course.

NERC, AHRC and ESRC are hoping to release up to £4 million funding for this call.

Details on the Announcement of Opportunity will be published on the NERC website and disseminated further via the Valuing Nature Network and relevant list servers / mailing lists of the funders. A one stage submission process is envisaged (ie straight to full proposals). All applications to the call must be collaborations between researchers in the natural and social/economic sciences and the arts/humanities. Proposals are expected to be for a maximum duration of three years. The funders expect to support two to four proposals.

Provisional timetable

  • Full proposal call opens in Je-S - early/mid-June 2015
  • Launch event - late June 2015
  • Full proposal deadline - early-September 2015
  • Assessment panel full proposals - mid-January 2016
  • Grants awarded - late Jan/early Feb 2016
