Technology Proof of Concept

Programme overview

The Technologies Proof of Concept programme was a NERC research programme that supported the development of new and innovative technologies for environmental science. In total the programme ran from 2008-2018 and provided funding for proof of concept projects at Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 1 to 4.

Background & objectives

NERC's 2007-2012 strategy 'Next Generation Science for Planet Earth' identified technology development as one of the key areas NERC needed to support in order to deliver the aims and objectives of the strategy. The NERC's previous strategy included a dedicated Technologies Theme and an associated Theme Action Plan and one of the actions from the first Technologies Theme Action Plan was this research programme, to fund the development of new and innovative technology concepts with potential applications to environmental science. Following this initial programme, the need for continued investment in developing and proving new technologies was still evident so NERC approved a second phase of funding in 2013.

The rationale behind enhancing such activity was the need to foster a dynamic and vibrant research base within both HEIs and NERC Research and Collaborative Centres where high risk - high reward technologies could be developed.

The second phase of the programme had two funding rounds over five years (2014-2018).

Reports & Key findings

A broad range of projects across the NERC remit were funded under this programme (from paper studies to laboratory experiments). A full list can be found on Grants on the Web.
