Macdonald Burlington Hotel, Birmingham

 This event has now closed

The About Drought Showcase presented a major opportunity to discover more about the outputs emerging from the £12 million five-year research council-funded UK Droughts & Water Scarcity programme. The programme is aimed at supporting improved decision-making and communication in relation to droughts and water scarcity for a range of sectors, including:

  • water suppliers, energy suppliers and regulators
  • agricultural sector
  • environmental policymakers, stakeholders and regulators
  • UK businesses, ranging from high volume industrial water users to local small and medium-sized enterprises
  • community planning organisations, communities, and not-for-profit special interest groups.

As well as hands-on interaction with key project datasets, experts were available to ask about on-going developments and give feedback on how best they could be tailored to support the participants' area of interest. The showcase gave the opportunity to participants to interact with other stakeholders and researchers.

The UK Drought & Water Scarcity programme has been underway for over three years and has already led to significant advances in our understanding of the many complex, interlinked drivers of drought; the wide range of impacts and the diversity of management responses. The final phase of the programme is now underway and, over the next 18 months, will synthesise the knowledge and outputs from the four research projects to maximise the impact of the programme for a diverse range of stakeholders.

Registration for this free event was limited to four delegates from each organisation. Please contact the Project Office at for further information.

Programme Highlights

There was a choice of interactive breakout sessions showcasing the programme work in the following areas, allowing participants to hear what had already been done and allowing them to shape our future work:

  • Monitoring and Early Warning
  • Narratives
  • Data
  • Agriculture
  • Environment
  • Water Supply and Utilities
  • Business & communities

A showcase walk took place taking in the canals and parks of Birmingham, stopping along the way for conversations with key local stakeholders.
