NERC scopes new strategic research programme on UK forests

27 February 2019

NERC will scope a new area for a potential large-scale strategic research investment over spring 2019, titled 'securing UK forest form, function and ecosystem services against 21st century pressures'.

We will shortly publish open calls for community members to join small scoping groups for this strategic programme area (SPA), which will develop a case for assessment and a funding decisions in autumn 2019. This potential SPA has emerged from the ideas process for strategic research, where NERC captures and builds on ideas for excellent strategic science coming directly from the environmental science community.

The fifth cut-off for ideas for strategic programme areas was in September 2018, with 12 ideas received. NERC's Strategic Programme Advisory Group (SPAG) reviewed the ideas and used a number of them to generate the proposals for SPAs that were considered by NERC's Science Board.

This potential SPA must meet NERC's criteria for a strategic programme and be prioritised against NERC's other strategic research investments, so it is possible that it will not result in a funded programme.

Open announcements of opportunity for research proposals will follow, if this strategic programme is approved.
