20 December 2013
The latest report on International Comparative Performance of the UK Research Base, commissioned by the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills every two years, shows UK environmental science research now leads all UK research fields in excellence.
The report tracks investment in, and performance of, the national research system in an international setting, combining a variety of indicators to present a multifaceted view of the UK's comparative performance in research as well as the trends that may affect its future position.
Analysis reveals that the UK again ranks first in the world for environmental science based on citation impact. Now environmental science outperforms all UK research fields on citation impact. A similar bibliometric analysis commissioned by NERC, covering eight years of publications to 2010, showed that NERC-funded research outperforms other UK environmental science.
The report also shows the UK punches its weight as a research nation, with productivity ranked first in the world per unit spend on research.
