New chair for the NERC Strategic Programme Advisory Group (SPAG)
13 February 2014
Professor Michael Ellis has been announced as the first chair of the new Strategic Programme Advisory Group for NERC.
NERC chief executive Duncan Wingham said:
"We are very pleased to have Professor Michael Ellis as chair of the Strategic Programme Advisory Group. We look forward to him providing strong guidance in this new way NERC will use to develop, prioritise and fund strategic research."
Professor Ellis said:
"The UK already leads the world in its environmental research. The new way NERC will identify and fund strategic research will provide an unprecedented opportunity for the community, from researchers to users, to drive the development of solutions to environmentally wicked problems. This is all about using NERC science for the direct benefit of society."
Professor Ellis is currently the science director for climate & landscape change at the British Geological Survey.
Michael will be working closely with NERC in recruiting the SPAG membership, a membership that will include innovative scientists and practitioners from across the spectrum of NERC disciplines.
