NERC's 50th anniversary
Formed by Royal Charter in 1965, the Natural Environment Research Council marked its 50th anniversary in 2015.
NERC was established to promote and support the best strategic and applied environmental science, to advance knowledge and technology, and provide knowledge and expertise for the benefit of society.
For many decades we have been investing in world-leading science. We work with our partners in business, government and the research community to make sure our science helps us manage our environmental responsibly as we support the UK's ambitions for growth and resilience in a changing world.
We marked our achievements, and those of the researchers we support, through a series of events during 2015.
The Royal Research Ship Discovery left its base in Southampton to travel up the Thames to Tower Bridge for a series of unique events.
Throughout our Summer of Science, NERC researchers took their work and enthusiasm out to the public, branching out from the usual science festival venues into shopping centres, music festivals, pubs and even beaches.
And our inaugural Impact Awards, held in January 2015, highlighted some of the best of British environmental science from the last 50 years, recognising and rewarding those NERC-funded researchers who have achieved significant impact from their work.
