NERC research centre and survey studentships
NERC's research centres provide leadership to the UK environmental science community and play significant and influential roles in international science collaborations.
Research centres host studentships studying topics within their science remit with funding from a variety of sources.
Next funding opportunity
NERC support six research centres that provide leadership to the UK science community within their science area. These research centres are provided with funding from NERC both directly as an annual allocation and as additional supplements from NERC research grants and external contracts. These centres are able to apply for NERC funding opportunities similar to any other eligible research organisations and host studentships both alone and in conjunction with other research organisations.
Research centres fund studentships from a variety of sources and the research focus of these studentships varies between centres. Research centres host students within their institutions as well as providing funding through initiatives, such as the BGS University Funding Initiative (BUFI) - external link, for research studentships at UK HEIs and research organisations.
Eligibility requirements vary depending on the funding source of the studentships. All students at NERC research centre have to have the same opportunities as other NERC students and must be provided with the same level of training and supervisory support. These training expectations are outlined in the Statement of Expectations for Doctoral Training available on the UKRI website - external link.
