Announcement of Opportunity: National capability services & facilities commissioning - Second round

Update 2 August 2018: The Announcement of Opportunity: Earth Observation document has had paragraph 15 updated to reflect recent developments in the expected panel assessment process. Table 4 (Annex B) has also been reordered and updated to clarify the new science capability expected to be provided by NEODAAS.

NERC would like to announce key dates as part of the second round of services and facilities (S&F) commissioning. NERC invites the following facilities only to apply for commissioning through a closed call:

  • Field Spectroscopy Facility (FSF) - University of Edinburgh
  • NERC Earth Observation Data Acquisition & Analysis Service (NEODAAS) - Plymouth Marine Laboratory

The timetable for key programme activities going forward is as follows:

  • Assessment panel - 14 November 2018
  • Decision announced - December 2018
  • Start date for S&F - 1 April 2019

How to apply

This opportunity is only open to those invited facilities listed above. No other applications will be accepted. Applicants should complete and submit proposals using the research councils' Joint Electronic Submission system (Je-S). Applicants must also upload a Case for Support form when submitting their application. Any submission which does not include the Case for Support form will not be considered.

The closing date is 16:00 on 30 August 2018.

The assessment panel will meet in November 2018. Applicants will be notified of the outcomes between November and December 2018, with awards starting April 2019.

This announcement forms part of NERC's recently completed review of its Earth observation portfolio of services and facilities. NERC confirms it will cease to provide NERC services and facilities funding to the NEODAAS Dundee Satellite Receiving Station and the NERC Airborne Research Facility.
